Where Cactus Sprint comes from
Endless runners have existed since Canabalt (2009), but the best-known one is a browser error page: the dinosaur Google hid in Chrome in 2014 is now run millions of times a day. The principle is as reduced as it gets – one key, one obstacle, rising speed. That is exactly why it still works on the hundredth attempt.
How it works
Goal
Run as far as you can. It keeps speeding up, and a single hit ends the run.
Controls
Space or ↑ jumps, ↓ ducks (hold it). A click jumps too.
Obstacles
Cacti, rocks, icicles or lava chunks – depending on the area – sit on the ground: jump them. Vultures fly at three heights: low means jump, middle means duck, high you can simply run under (jump there and you fly into it).
Ducking mid-air
Duck while airborne and you drop faster – handy to get down from a jump that went too high.
Areas
Every few hundred points the landscape changes: desert, sunset, desert night, canyon, ice field, volcano.
Three tips for better results
- 1Jump late rather than early: an early jump lands you in the middle of the next cactus cluster.
- 2Do not jump for high birds – simply running on is safer than any evasive move.
- 3Past a certain speed only rhythm helps; count the gaps.
