Where Street Frog comes from
Konami released the model for this genre in 1981; the developer reportedly had the idea while watching a cat trying to cross a busy road. What was new was the two-part structure: on the road standing still is safe, in the water it is fatal – the same action means the opposite depending on the half. It is regarded as one of the first arcade titles with a non-linear movement rhythm.
How it works
Goal
Get five frogs into the five slots on the far bank. Fill them all and the next stage starts – everything speeds up a little.
Controls
Arrow keys or W A S D. Each press is one hop; holding does nothing.
The road
One touch from a vehicle and the frog is gone. The median strip is safe.
The river
You cannot swim! Ride the logs and turtles – and they carry you along. Drift off screen and you go under with them. Turtles dive: first they blink, then they are gone.
Time
Every frog has a time limit. Whatever is left pays a bonus when you arrive.
Three tips for better results
- 1Wait in the safe strips until a full gap comes through – half gaps end badly.
- 2On the water always jump to the middle of a log, never the edge.
- 3Fill the outer slots first; the middle ones stay reachable later.
