Where Darts comes from
Darts began as a pub pastime in England; the story goes that soldiers threw shortened arrows at the bottoms of barrels. Today's number layout, alternating high and low fields, is attributed to Brian Gamlin of Bury (1896) – it punishes inaccuracy. 501 with a double out has been the tournament format since the 1970s, and the highest possible checkout is 170.
How it works
Goal
Both players start at 501. First to exactly zero wins the leg – but the final dart must be a double (the thin outer ring, or the inner bull for 50).
Throwing
You throw it yourself – nothing is random. 1. Move the mouse over the board: that is your aim. 2. Hold the mouse button and drag DOWN – that is the backswing. The further you drag, the more power. 3. Release to throw.
The green band on the pull gauge is the right power. Pull too little and the dart drops below your aim; pull too far and it sails above it. Pull crooked and the dart flies crooked.
Your hand trembles a little – the sway is regular, so you can time it. Higher levels tremble more and narrow the power band.
The fields
Large segment – face value. Thin outer ring – double. Thin middle ring – treble (treble 20 is 60, the highest score). Green inner ring – 25. Red eye – 50, and it counts as a double.
Bust
Going below zero, landing exactly on 1, or reaching zero without a double is a bust: the whole visit is wiped.
Visit
Three darts per visit, then it is your opponent's turn.
Three tips for better results
- 1Aim for an even finish: 40 or 32 are the friendliest leaves.
- 2Never leave yourself an odd number below 10 – there is no double in it.
- 3Treble 19 is the safe alternative when the 20 is not landing.
