Where Penalty Shootout comes from

Until 1970 drawn football matches were decided by drawing lots or by a replay. The German referee Karl Wald pushed the penalty shootout through the Bavarian association in 1970, and the world governing body adopted it the same year. The first major tournament final decided this way was the 1976 European Championship – settled by Antonín Panenka's cheeky chipped shot down the middle.

How it works

Goal

Five penalties each way, taking and saving in turn. Most goals wins; level scores go to sudden death.

Shooting

You take the kick yourself – nothing is rolled for you. 1. Move the mouse over the goal: that is your aim. 2. Hold the mouse button and drag DOWN – that is the backswing. 3. Release: the taker runs up and strikes it.

The green band on the pull gauge is the right power. Too little and the ball stays low; too much and it climbs over your aim. Pull crooked and the ball bends away.

While you aim, your foot trembles a little – regularly, so you can time it.

Saving

Pick your corner first: left/right arrows for the side, up/down for high or low. Space or a click dives.

A keeper cannot reach the whole goal – nobody gets to the very top corner.

Tip

Corners beat the keeper but sit close to the post. The middle always hits the target – if the keeper moves at all.

Three tips for better results

  1. 1Change corners after every goal – the keeper remembers your pattern.
  2. 2Waist-high into the corner is statistically the safest shot.
  3. 3When saving, the middle pays off more often than you would think: hesitant takers aim there.
