Play Yahtzee online

Five dice, three rolls, thirteen boxes – and each box may be used only once. The upper section pays a bonus from 63 points, the lower one holds the straights, the full house and the yahtzee itself. By the end every box is filled, whether you like it or not.

Where Yahtzee comes from

Edwin Lowe bought the rights in 1956 to a dice game a Canadian couple played on their yacht – hence the name Yahtzee. In Germany, Schmidt Spiele published it as Kniffel. The forerunners are older: poker dice and the English game Yacht date back to the 19th century. The chance of rolling five of a kind on a single throw is 1 in 1296.

How it works

Fill all 13 boxes with as many points as possible – and beat your opponents.

You roll five dice from the cup. Then you may keep dice and reroll the rest twice – click a die to keep it.

Finally you write the result into a free box in your column. Each box only once! The upper section pays a 35 point bonus from 63 points.

One to three computer players join in. On "Easy" they roll fairly blindly, on "Hard" they calculate every roll.

Three tips for better results

  1. 1In the upper section aim for three of each number – that is exactly the 63 points for the bonus.
  2. 2A small straight comes up more often than a full house; do not leave it until last.
  3. 3Cross off a weak box early while you can afford it – otherwise the yahtzee stays open at the end.
